The 1st Annual Data Protection Practical Compliance Conference was held in Dublin on 10th November 2006.

The conference, held at the Morrison hotel, proved to be a highly successful learning and networking event.

 - Data Protection Practical Compliance, November 2006 Dublin, Ireland -

Every topic was of interest to me in my role
and for my company as a whole. Excellent!
Jayne McCormac, Head of MIS,
Sage Ireland

The guest speakers ( archived page ) covered many angles of data protection issues that were of interest to the delegates: From consent to human resources issues, from outsourcing to marketing and from data exports to practical compliance tips.

 - The Data Protection Commissioner, Billy Hawkes -

The Data Protection Commissioner, Billy Hawkes, gave an excellent keynote speech on the challenges that organisations face in dealing with data protection compliance.  One of the major themes of the entire Conference was helping organisations to see data protection as an enabler rather than an obstacle.  The delegates appreciated the time he took to answer their questions.

Mr Hawkes reviewed the applicable Irish and European laws, and set out the different stages of data protection responsibility, from obtaining the data, through retaining data and the eventual disposal of data; and the different responsibilities during those stages.  He discussed the different rights and obligations under data protection law and covered data transfer issues.  He went on to discuss the role of the DPC and his to approach towards compliance, and gave the delegates great insight to how complaints are handled penalties when complaints are upheld.

The feedback from the delegates was excellent.  The event was sold out.

The date for the 2nd Annual Data Protection Practical Compliance Conference is Friday 9th November 2007.
