In his keynote address Billy Hawkes, the Data Protection Commissioner, said that he was, "happy to be here again to open this very practical data protection conference." Mr Hawkes let delegates know that the new data protection law expected from Europe, which is expected to increase the challenges for Data Protection Professionals, has been delayed until early in 2012. |
He revealed to delegates that there has been a significant increase in the number of data breaches in the past year, following the introduction of the code of practice on notifying breaches. Mr Hawkes reminded delegates of the challenges associated with cloud computing and discussed the things that companies must look out for when they are embarking on cloud outsourcing projects.
Speakers at the conference included experts from An Post, Arthur Cox, Barclays, the BBC, Deloitte and Google. Topics discussed included:
The Workshops on Day 2 were more popular than ever, with several sessions filling up several weeks before the event. Topics on Day 2 included 'Developing Data Protection Policies', 'Data Security for Portable Media', and 'Data Protection in Marketing'.
During the two days of the event, delegates had considerable opportunity for networking with the speakers and workshop leaders, as well as with the Data Protection Commissioner. The drinks reception on Day 1, sponsored by law firm Arthur Cox, attracted some very lively discussion.
PDP would like to extend their congratulations to Billy Hawkes for being appointed to the post of Data Protection Commissioner for a further 5 years.
We look forward to welcoming him back as keynote speaker at the 7th Annual Conference next year.
